Zeus, Poseidon and Hades drew lots after they defeated the Titans in the war against gods and Titans. Zeus got pulled first, and he picked the sky. Poseidon knew that there wasn't much in the sky, so when his name was pulled next, he chose the sea which was full of plants and animals. Hades was the last one to get picked, and there was only one option left, The Underworld. Hades didn't like the underworld, but he accepted it and didn't complain.
Before the god vs. titan war, the Cyclopes made Poseidon a powerful tridentWhenever Poseidon struck the water with it, he would create giant tidal waves, floods or storms. Whenever he struck the earth with it, earthquakes would happen and even sometimes he would make volcanoes erupt! You see, Poseidon had an important role the Greek society as he was the second most powerful god next to Zeus.
Poseidon was a very moody, greedy and violent Greek god. He wasn't always cruel and mean, sometimes he could be quite nice. When he drove his horse-pulled chariot across the water, the ocean and seas were calm and sailors were granted a safe passage to their destination. However, when angry, Poseidon could whip up huge waves and storms within seconds causing certain death for sailors.
